I've had this keyboard for about 3 years. Recently, one of the directional buttons stopped working. If you're a gamer like myself and put alot of pressure on your keyboard, look elsewhere for something more durable.
In over two years of ownership and regular continual use, I've replaced the batteries three times in the keyboard and twice in the mouse. The only improvements I could see to the design of this keyboard is 1) back-lit keys 2) extra mouse buttons and 3) a charging dock/station. I've thrown this thing across the room, a few keys came off, but snapped right back into place. The ergonomics are not the best, but the hotkey placement is far superior to that of the newer s520. Ok, and maybe a softer wrist rest. There is simply not a better keyboard/mouse combo in this price range to be found.
I have big hands and fingers, but I have never had any trouble with it. So I suppose you can take all opinions on a product with a grain of salt. The point is that I have fist-pounded this keyboard (HARD) on many occasions due to some irritating thing Windows was doing at the time. The mouse does fairly well on 2 AA's, as long as their alkaline. With alkaline batteries, I'd say I replace them every two months, but I am on the computer an average of 4-6 hours a day.As for the opinions:I have always found this keyboard comfortable. I've used it so much that i've worn a little spot on the left-click button of the mouse (though it should be noted that all keyboard characters are still sharp). I have had not one moment's problem from this product from day one.
Wonderful durability on this product.Fact:I'm one of those "angry" computer users. I'll admit to a tendency for electronic violence (bad, I know). The first thing that needs to be said is that it is almost impossible to build a product that satisfies all people. Amazing, frankly.Fact:As for battery usage, I am on my third set of AAA's for the keyboard in four years. They last forever, as they should in a keyboard. My rechareable batteries didn't last more than a week before a recharge. The bottom line is that I like this combo enough that I'd buy another if it died. All I can really say is that I cannot shower higher praise on a product. Setup is very simple.
What cannot be argued with are facts.Fact:I bought this exact combo in late 2005/early 2006, and have used it countless hours and I'm typing this very review on it. I've always found that the mouse tracks well. Never the keyboard's fault, I admit. Nevertheless, this thing still operates flawlessly. All buttons on both keyboard and mouse have a positive, tactile feel. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
I have owned this keyboard/mouse set for years now - I've only had to change the batteries a few times in spite of keeping my computer running at all times, and keeping my mouse and keyboard on at all times as well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the range for the keyboard/mouse is not the best - but it is certainly decent - Probably in the range of 10-12 feet (4.7 stars would be about right). Since I have my computer hooked up to my tv, this can be a concern, but generally it is a non-issue. I would strongly recommend this product to anybody.
I use rechargeable batteries, good brand. They don't seem to last long.Don't know how long.Unit works fine and price was reasonable.Would recommend this item.
